According to The Fast Lane Car’s Wednesday report, they shouldn’t abandon their reservations just yet. An unnamed source closes the Bronco project confirmed the Bronco hybrid would likely use the same electrified module transmission as the Explorer and F-150 hybrids.

Engine

Here are some reasons why this is cool. Ford can use the transmission to put the hybrid bits behind any engine they wish because the transmission has them. The hybrid 10-speed may be paired with a V6 EcoBoost or other variant of this engine. According to Fast Lane, this combination (or one similar) will produce upwards of 450 horsepower. Those are Raptor-like numbers friend. It’s impossible to predict torque output, but the Lincoln Aviator hybrid produces 415 pound-feet. So we would expect it to be in that range.

However, there is a catch. According to TLC’s unnamed source, the Bronco Hybrid is likely to be delayed until at least 2022. We suspect that Americans are not the most patient people on Earth. However, those who persevere will likely be rewarded with something amazing.

Ford didn’t put its foot forward when it launched its new SUV. A Ford Bronco can achieve 21 mpg with a 2.3-liter engine and no off-road modifications. The Bronco is not as efficient as the Jeep Wrangler and is only slightly better than the Toyota 4Runner which was introduced in 2009.

Ford will soon improve Bronco’s fuel economy with a hybrid powertrain. Ford CEOs mentioned building a hybrid Bronco. Bronco leaks show that the Bronco OS has an EV coaching mode and a section on treating hybrid batteries. Hybrids are a competitive necessity. Jeep already has a 4xePHEV at its dealerships, and Toyota has committed to building a hybrid 4Runner. Ford doesn’t face any technical obstacles to launching the Bronco hybrid. These components are already in other vehicles. A hybrid Bronco may be possible as early as next year.

Redesign

A Bronco electric will most likely be made, but it may take longer. Ford has confirmed that it will develop an EV platform capable of supporting off-road SUVs. The announcement almost confirms it will be used to make a Bronco. Ford CEO Jim Farley almost confirmed that a Bronco EV would be coming to Twitter. However, a dedicated EV platform is likely to take many years to develop and there isn’t any incentive to bring one to market right away. Toyota has been slow to develop EVs; Jeep’s Magneto concept, which is a two-door Rubicon stuffed full of batteries and not a gasoline engine, showed just how far away an EV Wrangler is.
