The new model, like the Transit Custom, will be made at Ford’s Turkish commercial vehicle plant. As part of a deal, Ford will also build electric passenger cars using Volkswagen’s MEB platform. Ford intends to offer zero-emissions capability across its entire line-up of commercial-vehicle models by 2024. Ford plans to have two-thirds (or more) of its commercial vehicle sales fall within these categories by 2030. However, mild-hybrid diesel engines are still available so Ford’s Dagenham, Essex engine plant is safe for the medium term.

The 2023 Transit Custom will get an electrified drivetrain option, as well as a host-connected technology. Both the Transit Custom and Tourneo Custom minibus versions are available as plug-in hybrids. Ford also announced the E-Transit for 2022, which is a fully electric version of its full-size Transit van. The company’s US arm plans to launch an electric F-150 pickup truck.
