After Ford pulled that train pulling trick, the all-electric Ford F-150 pickup truck became a known fact. The electric F-150 will not be available for purchase until 2022. This is even though covid has a history of crashing into carmakers’ plans. If all goes according to plan, then the electric F-150 could be on the market by 2022 for the model year 2023.

Changes

F-150 Lighting will be the most powerful F-150, featuring two electric motors as well as AWD. The battery is expected to be larger than the Mustang Mach-E’s either 66- or88 kWh back. It should be capable of delivering at least 300 miles per full charge Ford should develop the electric F-150 based on the F-150’s underpinnings. Ford may be developing a new architecture for its F-150 EV. The Blue Oval insists that the electric pickup will look a lot like the ICE-powered F-150 truck regardless of where it goes. It will also have a huge frunk.

The F-150 EV will either debut its own trims with different names or keep the existing trims from the combustion-engined truck. That’s still to be determined. Expect a lot of design tweaks to the truck’s nose. Ford will likely add a closed grille to the truck’s front to boost aerodynamics.

Powertrain & Capability

It will be powered by two electric motors (one per axle, presumably for AWD purposes), but this is all we know about the powertrain. The carmaker has not yet provided details on the battery pack that will power those motors, but there will be some. However, they aren’t revealing much about charging times and capacity. Ford’s first-ever electric vehicle, the Mustang Mach E, can be equipped with either a 68-kWh (Standard range) or 88-kWh (Extended range), and fitted with either 288 or 376 lithium cells. These cells come from LG Chem in Poland, which makes them in Europe at its plant. LG Chem also supplies the 2022 Ford E-Transit electric vehicle.

It is difficult to predict what kind of battery pack will be inside the F150 EV. Ford claims that the F-150 EV will be the most powerful F-150 yet made. The battery is expected to be heavy, possibly exceeding the 100-kWh limit. Today, these batteries are available. Lucid, Rimac, and NIO have already started using them. Rimac’s C_Two has a 120-kWh battery, NIO’s cars can use a 100-kWh unit, and Lucid’s Air sedan comes with a 113-kWh battery. Rivian plans to install the BEV R1T using three battery options: 105, 135, or 180 kWh. Why not aim high with battery capacity and size? F-150 customers purchase these trucks to do hard work. Ford must double the number of batteries in its electric pickup truck to ensure that there is no other purpose to purchasing an F-150 than to haul or tow cargo.

New 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Electric Pickup Price

Ford will build the F-150 electric pickup truck at Rouge, Michigan’s Dearborn complex. This new facility was built with $700 million. CNN reports that the Blue Oval will also be assembling its electric batteries at this location. Work is expected to begin in mid-2022. The electric Ford F-150 will not be on the market before summer 2022. That’s assuming everything goes according to plan. There are still possible delays due to the covid situation. Ford’s F-150 EV and Ford are awaiting the right timing, as many players will be arriving on the market at the same time or earlier.
