If you are not in Europe, the current Puma, Ford’s subcompact crossover is to be confused with its subcompact coupe from the late 1990s. The Puma shares the same architecture as Fiesta and will be taking over from it in WRC. By 2022, the WRC will be getting a major overhaul with a new class structure called the FIA Rally Pyramid. The Rally1 class is at the top of the Pyramid, where competitors will race to win the world championship. Rally5 is the foundation of the pyramid with lower-cost and more powerful machines for entry-level competitors.

Safety

With more standard components, such as a safety cell, the new Rally1 class makes significant changes to the World Rally Car format. This allows for cost control and greater efficiency. The most significant change is the adoption of a hybrid system, similar to many top motorsport classes such as Formula 1 and the 2023 IndyCars.

Engine

Rally1 uses a standardized hybrid system from Compact Dynamics, just like the IndyCars or LMDh machines. It has a 100-kW electric engine and a 3.9-kWh lithium-ion battery that can be charged via a plug-in. The Puma will have an electric drive paired with a four-cylinder EcoBoost 1.6-liter engine. Rally1 cars must run on electricity to move around the service park or in densely populated areas between stages. The hybrid will be available for performance enhancement at different stages.

Ford will make its first attempt at an electrified racecar, unlike other automakers that have used hybrid machinery in Formula 1, the World Endurance Championship, and Formula 1. These race cars are also the first to be run in major championships as plug-in hybrids.
