Engine

You might be interested to know that the Ford Maverick is possible as a hybrid. The standard model comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, paired with an electrical motor, to produce 191 horsepower and combined 155 lb-ft torque. The power is sent to the front wheels by a continuously variable automated transmission (CVT) that transmits it. You can also choose a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. This engine is a regular engine and not a hybrid. It produces 250 horsepower and 277 lb-ft. The engine’s 2.0-liter displacement uses an eight-speed auto transmission. It can be paired either with front- or all-wheel-drive. These powertrain options are very similar to Escape’s Escape.

Interior

It’s quite cool. Ford used seemingly cheap materials to create the interior, but it doesn’t feel cheap. There are some hard plastics, but they don’t make the interior look luxurious. It’s possible to find tough, durable surfaces that look good and can withstand the abuse, especially if they are placed in high-traffic areas. There’s also hard, hollow plastic that holds water bottles in place, helping to maintain the Maverick’s price within a reasonable range. Only one Maverick body type is available — the crew cab. It’s quite spacious. There’s ample space for small items in the console, and enough room for two adults of average size. Two adults of average size should be able to fit comfortably in the back seat, and three children should be able to squeeze into the back seat. Because of its low roof, most drivers and passengers will have to duck to enter the Maverick. There is plenty of headroom once you get inside.

Every Maverick trim level comes standard with a variety of tech features, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto smartphone integration, an eight-inch center screen, two USB ports (1 USB-A, one USB-C), 4G Wi-Fi capability, and a six-speaker stereo. This is a remarkable package of tech considering the Maverick’s affordable starting price. Although the standard driver aids are shorter, you still get forward collision mitigation. This alerts you to an impending collision and applies brakes in certain situations. Ford’s Sync3 system is also available on an 8-inch touchscreen. We have a lot of experience with it. Although Ford’s Sync system may not be our favorite in terms of screen resolution or layout, it is very easy to use voice controls for simple tasks such as changing the radio station. We see this as a sign that integrated navigation systems are becoming more common on the Maverick. Many cheaper vehicles will be able to use smartphones for navigation as more customers rely on them.

The Maverick offers many optional driver aids, including:

  • Adaptive cruise control (maintains the Ford at a pre-set distance from the Ford and the car in front).
  • Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alarm (warns you when a vehicle is in your blind spot while in reverse or during a lane shift)
  • Evasive steering assistance (enhances forward collision mitigation system using steering-based collision avoidance).
  • Lane departure warning (alerts if your vehicle starts to drift from its lane).
  • Lane-keeping assistance (returns the Maverick to its lane if it starts drifting over the lane marker).
  • Lane centering (a minor steering correction to keep the vehicle in its lane)
  • Rear parking sensors warn you of obstacles behind your vehicle during parking

Fuel Economy

The official EPA estimates are not yet available for the Maverick. Ford’s initial press release claims that the base hybrid powertrain will get 40 mpg in the city. In the early Maverick brochure, we also saw that Ford is targeting 37 mpg with the base powertrain (41 City/33 Highway). This is an extremely high rating for any cargo bed. The Bronco Sport and Ford Escape powertrains are a good indication that this will be the highest point. The combined fuel economy of the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine is expected to be below 30 mpg.

Trim Levels

The 2022 Ford Maverick will come in three trim levels at launch: XL (XLT), XLT (XLT), and Lariat (Lariat). Although the XL will not have much equipment it will still be eligible for many of the higher trim levels’ options. The turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, as well as the 4K towing kit (trailer brake controller and trailer hitch receiver with seven-pin wiring harness), are available in all trim levels.

2022 Ford Maverick Release Date & Price

The 2022 Maverick will cost at least $21,490, including destination, for an XL model that includes power features, LED headlights, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen, with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Maverick will go on sale in 2021 with the Lariat and XLT trims.
