The sixth-generation Explorer is now a unibody crossover with coil suspensions, three rows, and turbocharged power plants. Ford claims that the new “Timberline”, the Explorer’s most capable off-road trim, is a significant evolution. Ford engineers have added a beefier suspension system to the Explorer Timberline, with new shocks and springs and anti-sway bars (borrowed from the Police Interceptor), as well as increased ground clearance by 0.8%.

The Explorer Timberline also has a minimum ground clearance of 8.7 inches for unpaved roads and uneven trails. As if the Duelers weren’t enough, a Torsion limited-slip rear differential provides traction. Ford bolted up a set of factory steel skid plates to go along with the package, even though it has a respectable 8.7 inches (for the three-row crossover segment) of ground clearance.

Engine

The engine is a powerful four-banger, a 2.3-liter EcoBoost that produces 300 horsepower and 310-foot pounds of torque. This engine was also used in the new Bronco. The engine is paired with a 10-speed auto transmission.

Specs

Ford’s Forged Green Metallic is also featured on the rig. The interior is modern, chic, and outdoorsy with its cloth seat inserts, orange accent stitching, and leather upholstery. Can the Explorer land on its own? It looks like it could, especially considering it can tow 5,300lbs. This could be a great trailer puller. Would the Explorer be my go-anywhere rig choice? No. This could be a great option if you have a family who wants to go on a little bit of soft Overlanding. This is possible if they travel intelligently and understand the capabilities of their rig, and are prepared with self-recovery equipment.
